President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has rewarded Nigeria’s senior women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, with the Naira equivalent of $100,000 each, a national honour, the Order of the Niger (OON), and a flat, following their historic fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s Afrobasket title.

The announcement was made on Monday by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented the President at a reception held in honour of the team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

D’Tigress made history by becoming the first team (male or female) to win five consecutive FIBA Afrobasket titles, following a hard-fought 78–64 victory over Mali in the final held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, Côte d’Ivoire, on Sunday. The win also secured them an automatic ticket to the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin, Germany.

Each of the 12 players on the championship-winning roster will receive the naira equivalent of $100,000, while the coaching crew and backroom staff will receive $50,000 each.

In addition to the cash prizes, both players and officials have been honoured with the Order of the Niger (OON), Nigeria’s second-highest civilian award, and gifted apartments as part of the federal government’s appreciation for their exceptional achievement.

The vice president in a statement said, “You’re continental champions once more and the first African team to qualify for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Germany. You have conquered Africa and opened the door to global greatness.

“Your victory over Mali is a declaration not only of your tactical superiority, but also of your readiness to dazzle the world, and I assure you that you’re going forward with the blessing of the entire nation.

“You wore the green and white not just as colours but as a symbol of conviction and honour, and now, you wear the crown as the queens of Africa for the fifth consecutive time. To coach  Rena Wakama, you represent the evolution of leadership in Nigerian sports. Your achievements have shattered ceilings and inspired countless young girls nationwide.

“We owe you not just applause but decisive action, which is why under this administration, we are repositioning sports as a key pillar of our national development strategy.”
