Nigeria’s D’Tigress narrowly escaped what could have been the biggest upset of the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket, coming from behind to edge a stubborn Mozambique side 60-55 in a pulsating encounter at the Palais de Treichville in Abidjan on Monday.
The victory sees Nigeria secure a spot in the quarterfinals, joining Uganda, who also recorded two wins from two in advancing from Group C.
Mozambique came out strong, outscoring D’Tigress 13-9 in the first quarter. The second quarter was evenly matched, finishing 15-15, with the Southern Africans holding a slim 28-24 lead at halftime.

The third quarter began with a 7-0 run by Mozambique, extending their lead. However, D’Tigress found their rhythm and battled back, outscoring their opponents 18-15 to close the gap to just one point heading into the final quarter.
Nigeria started the fourth quarter on a high, opening with a 6-0 run, but Mozambique continued to fight. Still, D’Tigress held firm under pressure, outscoring their opponents 18-12 in the final stretch to seal a hard-earned five-point victory.
Veteran guard Ezinne Kalu led the way for Nigeria, posting a game-high 16 points and four assists. Promise Amukamara chipped in 13 points and six rebounds, while Murjanatu Musa delivered a standout all-round performance with 12 points, a game-high 12 rebounds, five assists, and three steals, showcasing her dominance at both ends of the floor.

Reigning MVP Amy Okonkwo is yet to hit top form in the tournament, but she contributed eight points and two steals in the win.
Mozambique’s only player in double digits was Ingvild Mucauro, who tallied 16 points and eight rebounds. Carla Covane followed with nine points.
Earlier in the day, Group C produced another shocker as Senegal suffered their second consecutive defeat, falling 73-70 to Uganda.
