Former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has expressed deep sorrow following the passing of legendary Nigerian goalkeeper Peter Rufai.
Taking to his official X page, Musa shared an emotional tribute to the 1994 AFCON winner, describing him as a “true giant of Nigerian football.”
“Can’t believe I’m typing this – a post to bid farewell to a true giant of Nigerian football, Peter Rufai. Your heroic reflexes and unwavering presence between the posts brought us moments of pride on the world stage,” Musa wrote.
The former Super Eagles skipper further honoured Rufai’s enduring impact on Nigerian football, highlighting the goalkeeper’s lasting legacy.

“May your spirit continue to inspire future generations of Super Eagles. Though you’ve left us, your legacy soars higher than any trophy. Fly high, DODOMAYANA — the nation mourns a hero.”
Musa also extended his condolences to Rufai’s family, former teammates, friends, and supporters: “Condolences to your family, friends, teammates, and fans. Rest in peace, legend.”
Peter Rufai, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 61, was a celebrated figure in Nigerian football, remembered for his pivotal role in Nigeria’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations victory and his appearances at two FIFA World Cups.

His death has left a void in Nigerian football, with the national federation, former players, and fans all mourning the loss of a man who defined excellence between the sticks.
The Nigeria Football Federation issued an official statement today via X, also calling Rufai “a giant of Nigerian football” and affirming that “your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond.”
