Russia’s head coach Valery Karpin has hailed the Super Eagles as one of the strongest sides his team has faced in recent years, as both teams prepare to face off in an international friendly on June 6, even in the absence of key players like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.

Speaking to Russian media ahead of the clash, Karpin admitted that Nigeria presents a serious test for his side, putting the three-time African champions in the same league as Serbia and Cameroon in terms of quality.

“Even considering that Nigeria will not have several stars coming, can we call this opponent the most serious in recent times? It is difficult to judge,” Karpin said. “One of the strongest – can be put on a par with Serbia and Cameroon.”

While Nigeria is expected to field a team missing a few regulars due to end-of-season fatigue or injury, Karpin noted that both sides are dealing with similar challenges in terms of player fitness.

“I don’t think the end of the season can affect the condition in any way. The Nigerian national team is in the same situation,” he explained. “Their players, who play in European championships, started their season in July and it’s only just ended now. In this case, our players are even in the black – they had a rest in December, while the majority of the Nigerians probably haven’t had a rest for ten months.”

On the emotional atmosphere in his camp, the Russian coach acknowledged the different mental states of players arriving from various club campaigns, but believes the national team environment helps to reset focus.

“Some players arrive after victories, some after defeats – but football gives you a chance to forget unpleasant moments quickly. Now they are switching: different faces around, a different atmosphere – so I think the national team even helps.”

Karpin reserved special praise for the Nigerian squad, stating that even without some headline names, the Super Eagles still boast quality across the pitch.

“First of all, the level of the players is impressive. Yes, Osimhen and Lookman will not come, but the other players are definitely not below the level. The team has not been working with the current coach for very long, so individual actions are more noticeable for now,” he said.

He added that while Nigeria may still be developing its team identity under Eric Chelle, the players’ talent and intent are already evident.

Looking ahead to the clash, Karpin expressed hope that Nigeria would bring high intensity, pressing football — a challenge he welcomes.

“Let’s see how they press – well or not so well. I would like them to press – to test our players in a game against such a team.”
