Nigeria’s Samuel Ogazi has been crowned the SEC men’s 400m champion after a commanding performance at the 2024 SEC Outdoor Championships, clocking a time of 45.04s to take gold.
The Paris 2024 Olympics finalist beat a strong field that included NCAA indoor champion Will Floyd, as well as Josiah Wrice (45.40s) and Ervin Pearson (45.58s), who settled for second and third respectively.
With this victory, Ogazi becomes the University of Alabama’s first SEC men’s 400m champion since fellow Olympian Kirani James claimed back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011. It also marks an upgrade on the silver medal Ogazi won last year. Impressively, he stormed to gold from lane 9.
In the women’s 400m, Nigeria’s Ella Onojuvwevwo earned her first individual SEC medal, finishing second in 51.26s. She ran a well-timed race, conserving energy in the first half before launching a strong attack over the final 200m. Only NCAA leader Aaliyah Butler finished ahead, winning in 50.36s.
Onojuvwevwo returned to the track to anchor the University of Alabama’s women’s 4x400m relay team, which won its heat and placed fourth overall in 3:30.74. She teamed up with Rose, Williams, and White in the effort.
