The Nigerian high jumper Temitope Adeshina continued her dominant form on Sunday, clearing 1.97m to win the women’s high jump at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Kansas.

The height equaled her personal best and Nigerian national record—and more importantly, secured her qualification for the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.

It was her ninth straight win of the season.

Adeshina, representing Texas Tech, didn’t just win. She destroyed the field. Her closest challenger, Sharie Enoe, finished second with a personal best of 1.88m. Adeshina’s winning mark also set a new Big 12 meet record and pushed her to the top of the NCAA rankings.

This is not the first time the 25-year-old is hitting 1.97m.

She first cleared the height in June 2024 at the NCAA Championships, becoming the first Nigerian woman in history to jump that high. That performance booked her ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympics and smashed Doreen Amata’s long-standing national record.

Adeshina also holds the national indoor record, clearing 1.96m January 2024 to break Doreen Amata’s record of 1.93m set in 2016.

She also became the seventh Nigerian athlete to automatically qualify for individual events at the 2025 World Athletics Championships holding in Tokyo, Japan in September. They are:

  1. Tobi Amusan (women’s 100mH)
  2. Ezekiel Nathaniel (men’s 400m, 400mH)
  3. Favour Ofili (women’s 100m, 200m)
  4. Ella Onojuvwevwo (women’s 400m)
  5. Tima Godbless (women’s 200m)
  6. Samuel Ogazi (men’s 400m)
  7. Kanyinsola Ajayi (men’s 100m)
