Okon-George, Ashe, Bada shine as MTN CHAMPS Continental Relays deliver thrilling Day 2 in Lagos

Day 2 of the MTN CHAMPS Continental Relays lived up to the hype, with the Yabatech and Unilag Sports Complexes buzzing as athletes battled for supremacy in a series of electrifying contests across sprint, middle-distance, and field events.

Six-time national 400m champion, Patience Okon-George, showed she still has plenty in the tank, storming to victory in the women’s 400m with a commanding Season’s Best of 52.67s. She held off Team MTN’s Miracle Donald-Uwem, who clocked 55.10s for 2nd, while Pemisire Adepoju Adedoyin came in 3rd with 56.29s.

In the men’s 400m, former national champion Samson Nathaniel returned to winning ways, crossing the line first in 46.71s. Team MTN’s Benjamin Magaji equalled his Personal Best of 48.04s for 2nd place, just ahead of Deji Sholotan who clocked 48.31s.

Sprint sensation Favour Ashe, one of the favourites coming into the event, lived up to expectations in the men’s 100m, clocking 10.28s to grab gold. He was followed by Chidera Ezeakor (10.38s) and Thankgod Igube (10.49s).

In the women’s 100m, Iyanoluwa Bada clinched victory in a wind-assisted 11.30s (+2.6m/s), with Flore-Julie Krakre (11.86s) and Janet Adesiyan (11.90s) completing the podium.

The junior category continued to produce standout performances, with John Caleb extending his winning streak in the men’s 100m, stopping the clock at 10.45s. Qudus Akintoye (10.65s) and Abdulrahman Jimoh (10.75s) followed closely behind.

Team MTN dominated the junior women’s 100m final, led by Lucy Nwankwo who broke the 12-second barrier for the first time with a lifetime best of 11.99s. Mercy Ogbonna (12.16s) and Azeezat Muhammed Raji (12.18s) also ran personal bests to finish 2nd and 3rd.

In the middle-distance events, Hamid Sambo took control of the men’s 1500m, winning in 3:59.12, while Ronke Akanbi was victorious in the women’s category.

The men’s Long Jump saw a surprise winner in Rukevwe Godsgift Nwagbowu, who leapt 7.47m to beat favourite Ibukun Daramola, who settled for 2nd with a 7.39m effort. Jeffrey Miracle placed 3rd with 7.25m.

Mary Adeniran emerged as the women’s Long Jump champion, setting a new Personal Best of 6.14m. She was followed by Glory Jarrett and Precious Okoronkwo in 2nd and 3rd.

The MTN CHAMPS Relays continue on Thursday with finals in the relay events expected to light up the tracks in Lagos.
