Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers scored twice as Rangers staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Kilmarnock 4-2 in Barry Ferguson’s first game in charge on Wednesday.
Rangers had parted ways with head coach Phillipe Clement following a 2-0 loss to St. Mirren in their previous league outing. Former captain Barry Ferguson thus took the reins, and his first task was to secure an away win against a Kilmarnock side unbeaten at home in three games.
Barry Ferguson’s tenure got off to a nightmare start as Kilmarnock scored two early goals. Joe Wright’s brilliant header in the 11th minute was followed by Brad Lyons’ strike two minutes later, giving the home side a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Despite trailing, Rangers maintained control of the game and eventually reaped the rewards as Václav Cerny’s clean strike 10 minutes before halftime reduced the deficit, giving the away side hope going into the break.
Rangers returned for the second half with renewed optimism, determined to complete an incredible comeback and seven minutes after the restart, Cyriel Dessers scored with a brilliant header from James Tavernier’s well-taken corner to level the scoreline.
With the scores tied, Dessers proved to be the hero once again, receiving a well-timed pass from Ridvan Yilmaz before firing in a first-time right-footed volley beyond the goalkeeper’s reach, giving Rangers the lead in the 62nd minute. Nedim Bajrami sealed the win for the away side, scoring their fourth goal in the 85th minute.
The impressive comeback victory took Rangers to 59 points in 28 games, 13 points behind league leaders Celtic. With their first win under Barry Ferguson secured, “The Gers” will aim to maintain their momentum when they host Motherwell on Saturday.
