Atalanta head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has commended Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman for his impressive brace in their 5-0 demolition of Empoli on Sunday, helping his side close the gap on Serie A league leaders Inter Milan to just three points.

Despite recent tensions between Lookman and Gasperini, the Nigerian forward continued his fine form for Atalanta, winning the man of the match award and scoring his 17th goal of the season in all competitions to equal his total tally of goals from last season, with 12 Serie A matches still to play.

Gasperini was full of admiration for Lookman’s performance in his post-match press conference, saying, “Lookman has always scored a lot of goals, at least since he joined Atalanta. He has become an extraordinary player, especially when he puts himself at the disposal of the team. He said that he feels a bond with the fans, and I appreciate that very much.”

Although Lookman and Gasperini did not shake hands after the Nigerian was substituted in the 76th minute, suggesting some lingering tension, the Italian tactician downplayed the issue, asserting that they are all professionals.

“I don’t know what you mean by professionalism, but it’s the best way to move forward. Professionalism on my part? We’re all professionals, we had a good match and scored good goals,” the head coach said.

Lookman’s impressive form has made him one of the most sought-after players in the Serie A this season and he is expected to attract interest from top European clubs in the summer transfer window when he will reportedly leave Atalanta.

However, before then, Lookman will be focused on helping the Italian side push for the Serie A title. With his current form, it is indisputable that the Nigerian forward will be a crucial player for Atalanta if they are to fight for the trophy.

With just three points separating them from Inter Milan, Atalanta are well-placed to mount a title push as the season enters its final stretch and Lookman will be hoping to emulate the achievement of Victor Osimhen, who led Napoli to their first Serie A title since 1990.
