Odunayo Adekuoroye failed to advance to the semi-final of the women’s wrestling 57kg freestyle event after a dramatic Victory by fall (5:0) loss to China’s Kexin Hong.

Adekuoroye, a World bronze medalist seeking her first Olympic medal in her third Games, started strong, taking an early lead with a pair of takedowns.

However, Hong fought back relentlessly, responding with a takedown of her own and three lace-lock rolls to close the gap and eventually take an 8-4 advantage.

The second period was a rollercoaster of emotions. Adekuoroye regained the lead based on criteria after securing a takedown and lace lock, but with just 44 seconds remaining, Hong executed a devastating cradle, pinning Adekuoroye to the mat for the fall and securing a stunning victory.

Earlier in the day, Adekuoroye had advanced to the quarterfinals by injury default after her opponent, Chaimaa Aouissi of Algeria, was forced to withdraw due to a head gash.

The defeat ends Adekuoroye’s Olympic dream for now, while Hong moves on to the semifinals.
