Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi will be absent from the club’s upcoming pre-season training camp in Spain due to a personal family matter.
The Athletic reported on Saturday that the 26-year-old Nigerian international has been granted leave by the club to address this situation.
Awoniyi has been in Nigeria since the close of last season, taking part in may charity and family events.
Forest’s Spanish camp, set to take place at the Pinetar Arena in Murcia, includes three friendly matches. The team is scheduled to face Sunderland on Friday, followed by games against Millwall (Tuesday, July 23) and Elche (Saturday, July 27).
It remains uncertain whether Awoniyi will join his teammates at any point during the Spanish tour.
The 2023-24 season proved challenging for Awoniyi, who battled multiple injuries. Despite a strong start, scoring in his first three Premier League appearances, he later suffered a recurrence of a groin injury that required surgery. This setback forced him to miss much of December and January, including the Africa Cup of Nations. A subsequent thigh injury sidelined him for six weeks in March and April.
Despite these setbacks, Awoniyi managed to make 20 appearances in the Premier League last season, including 12 starts, and contributed six goals to Forest’s campaign.
Nottingham Forest is set to kick off their 2024-25 Premier League season with a home fixture against Bournemouth on August 17.
In preparation, the club has scheduled additional friendlies against Villarreal on August 2 and Olympiacos on August 8.
