…Onuachu now has 20 goals in 24 games in all appearances

Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu was on target as Trabzonspor delivered an emphatic statement in the Turkish Cup with a commanding 4–2 victory over Başakşehir on Tuesday evening, sealing progression from the group stage in style.

‎The encounter was a thrilling contest from start to finish, with momentum swinging before the visitors’ attacking quality ultimately proved decisive. Trabzonspor showed clinical edge in front of goal, converting key chances at crucial moments to secure the two-goal cushion.

‎Trabzonspor opened the scoring early through Felipe Augusto, setting the tone for an aggressive attacking display. Başakşehir responded through Nuno Da Costa in the second half to level proceedings, ensuring the contest remained finely balanced.

Başakşehir tightened their grip on the contest in the 66th minute, Ivan Brnić calmly adding the team’s second goal – minutes after the 48th-minute equaliser had brought them back on level terms.

‎Trabzonspor responded four minutes later, with Mustafa Eskihellaç netting the equaliser. The turning point came late in the second half when Paul Onuachu powered home to restore Trabzonspor’s advantage. His imposing presence in the box once again made the difference in a high-pressure moment. Ozan Tufan later added another a minute later to seal the 4–2 victory and confirm Trabzonspor’s place in the next round.

Onuachu’s decisive contribution and overall influence in the final third earned him recognition as one of the standout performers of the night, underlining his importance in the cup campaign.

‎After the game, head coach Fatih Tekke was full of praise for his Nigerian striker, highlighting not just his goals but his professionalism and work ethic.

‎“When I first saw Onuachu, I called him the top scorer when he arrived. I think he has special talents. What I want from him is to be a little better. For example, he makes simple turnovers. If he doesn’t, he’ll get more goal opportunities. We are very happy with Onuachu.

“Onuachu isn’t scoring goals alone; we are happy with the whole team. Onuachu’s match performance is good; he scored many goals. His training performance is very good. Almost 3 players scored 40 goals. What I like most about Onuachu is his training performance. He’s 100% in every training session.

“We need to thank the team; the result can never depend on one person. There is serious effort here. All the players are really working hard. They try to do whatever we tell them at every moment. Sometimes less, sometimes more. Without exaggeration, we continue to fight in a humble way.”

‎Tekke’s remarks reflect a manager pleased not only with the result but with the collective mentality of his squad. While Onuachu continues to deliver crucial goals, the coach was quick to emphasize that success is built on teamwork rather than individual brilliance.

The Nigerian forward’s aerial dominance, hold-up play, and growing sharpness in front of goal have made him a central figure in Trabzonspor’s attacking structure. Yet, as Tekke pointed out, there remains room for improvement – particularly in minimizing simple turnovers that could further increase his goal output.

‎With this 4–2 victory, Trabzonspor not only strengthened their cup ambitions but also reinforced the growing confidence within the squad. If Onuachu maintains his current form, and training intensity, he could play an even bigger role as the competition enters its decisive stages.
