Former Super Eagles coach Finidi George is poised for a return to club management, with Rivers United expected to announce him as their new head coach soon.
George, who enjoyed a successful three-year stint with Enyimba, culminating in the club’s 2023 NPFL title win, will take over from Stanley Eguma, who was dismissed by Rivers United towards the end of last season.
Reports suggest George has already met with both the club chairman and the state governor, securing their approval for his appointment.
This comes after a brief and challenging spell as manager of the Nigerian national team. Having left Enyimba to take the national job in May, George resigned after the team’s disappointing start, failing to record a win in their first two games under his leadership.
A native of Port Harcourt, the 53-year-old began his career with Calabar Rovers, Iwanyanwu Nationale and represented local club Sharks FC for two seasons before embarking on a stellar European career.
Most notably, he played for Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam, achieving immense success. This included a Champions League title in 1995 and a runner-up finish the following season.
Returning to his home state, George’s mission with Rivers United, nicknamed the “Pride of Rivers,” will be to revitalize the team and challenge for their second NPFL title.
