Portuguese top-flight side Famalicão have announced the signing of Nigerian striker Umar Abubakar on a five-year deal from Nigerian academy side Footwork FC, Bold Sports reports.

Abubakar was one of the most prolific strikers for Jong Genk last season, scoring 21 goals in 27 appearances. He played a pivotal role in the team’s promotion to the Belgian Challenger Pro League.

His outstanding performances attracted interest from several clubs across Europe, all keen to secure his signature.

Reacting to the move, Abubakar expressed his excitement about beginning his professional career in Portugal.

“I’m very happy to have signed for Futebol Clube de Famalicão. I know it’s a good team with talented players, many of them young, and led by a strong coaching staff,” Abubakar said during his unveiling.

“This is a club that has consistently performed well in Portuguese football and offers excellent conditions for players to develop and improve.”

“I hope to integrate into the team as quickly as possible and contribute to building a strong group.”

Speaking about his playing style, Abubakar described himself as a striker with a natural instinct for goals.

“I am a box-to-box striker, strong in the air, and always eager to take advantage of opportunities to score and help the team succeed collectively,” he added.

Abubakar, who developed at Footwork FC in Nigeria, was previously on loan at Gent. However, the Belgian club failed to finalize a permanent deal.

According to reports, Austrian side Rapid Vienna had initially submitted a €300,000 bid for the striker, but Footwork FC rejected the offer. It is believed that Famalicão secured his services for €800,000, including bonuses.
