Cyriel Dessers insists he’ll succeed in Serie A

After enduring a six-game goal drought in the Italian Serie A, Nigeria international, Cyriel Dessers, says he can’t wait to open his goals account for new club Cremonese, also insisting that he has what it takes to thrive in the league.

Dessers joined the Serie A newcomers from Belgian giants Genk in the summer for€6.5m after his impressive performance in the 2021/22 season while on loan at Dutch side Feyenoord where he impressed both in the league and in the Europa Conference League.

He became the first golden boot winner in Conference League history beating Roma’s Tammy Abraham to the award with 10 goals in 13 games.

His performance in the Conference League raised his profile in Europe which led to his transfer to the Serie A newcomers, however, there’s been a question mark on his ability to thrive in Italy having gone six games without a goal despite scoring three goals in three games for Genk in the 2022/23 campaign before securing his move.

The striker who insists that it’s just a slow start has stressed that he has all it takes to play in the Italian topflight league.

“Now I must start scoring in Serie A. I am an expert when it comes to playing in the opponent’s penalty box. I showed this in the match with Roma, where I put pressure on their centre-backs and fought hard to win aerial duels,” the 27-year-old told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“At the Olimpico this year I came very close to scoring and demonstrated that I can do well in Serie A.”

Dessers will have the opportunity to open his account for Cremonese when they welcome Lazio to the Stadio Giovanni Zini on Sunday.
