Nigerian striker Chuba Akpom made his debut for Ipswich Town on Saturday but was unable to inspire his side to victory as they suffered a 1-0 defeat against Preston North End in their Championship clash at Deepdale, Bold Sports reports.
Ipswich came into the game hoping to secure their first win of the season after back-to-back draws against Birmingham and Southampton. Akpom started the game on the bench, with Scottish forward George Hirst leading the attack for the visitors.
The hosts, buoyed by their home supporters, started brightly and were handed an early opportunity when Milutin Osmajic was fouled inside the box in the 10th minute. The Montenegro international calmly converted the resulting penalty to give Preston the lead.

Despite dominating possession for large parts of the first half, Ipswich struggled to create clear chances and went into the break without a single shot on target.
In the second half, Ipswich increased their tempo and pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Akpom was introduced in the 77th minute, replacing Sammie Szmodics, but the visitors still failed to break down Preston’s resilient defence.
The hosts eventually held on to secure their second win of the season, maintaining their unbeaten start to the campaign. Meanwhile, the defeat means Ipswich remain winless, having picked up only two points from their opening three matches.
The Tractor Boys will now turn their attention to their next fixture against Derby County on Saturday, 30 August, hoping Akpom’s Championship experience can help them kick-start their season.
