Chibuike Nwaiwu has received a two-match UEFA suspension. The Trabzonspor defender will miss European action after his late red card against Ferencváros.
Nwaiwu has started all three of Trabzonspor’s competitive matches this season. He played 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw at Kasımpaşa and played 90 minutes in a 2-1 win over Başakşehir.
UEFA’s disciplinary decision follows Nwaiwu’s dismissal against Ferencváros. The Nigerian centre-back saw a direct red card in stoppage time.
The incident came during Trabzonspor’s 1-0 home defeat. Kristoffer Zachariassen scored the only goal in the 17th minute. Nwaiwu then received his marching orders in the 90+6th minute.
His suspension now creates a defensive problem for Trabzonspor. The Turkish club must find another option at centre-back.
Nwaiwu had played every minute of the match before his dismissal. He also started the club’s next domestic fixture. That game ended with Trabzonspor beating Başakşehir 2-1 on August 23.
Nwaiwu will miss Thursday’s return leg in Hungary. Trabzonspor travel to face Ferencváros on August 27.
The Turkish side must overturn a 1-0 deficit. The first leg took place at Papara Park on August 20. Zachariassen’s early goal proved decisive.
Trabzonspor need a strong result to reach the Europa League league phase.
Nwaiwu’s absence therefore comes at a difficult moment. Trabzonspor already need to overturn a narrow first-leg disadvantage.
The Nigerian defender will also miss another UEFA match. His two-game suspension extends beyond Thursday’s return fixture.
Nwaiwu joined Trabzonspor in January 2026. He made 16 Süper Lig appearances last season. He scored three goals and added one assist.
For Trabzonspor, the immediate task is clear. They must overcome Ferencváros without one of their regular defenders.
