Frank Lampard has praised Taiwo Awoniyi after the Nigerian striker made a strong impact for Coventry City. Awoniyi scored and assisted in the 4-2 Carabao Cup win over Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday.
Awoniyi started his Coventry career with limited minutes. He came off the bench during the 3-0 defeat to Arsenal. Lampard had already explained that the striker needed time to regain his match fitness.
The Nigerian then made his first Coventry start against Plymouth. He needed only three minutes to score. Caleb Yirenkyi’s clever flick sent him through on goal.
Awoniyi finished calmly to put Coventry ahead. Two minutes later, he turned provider for Jack Rudoni. Rudoni’s goal gave Coventry a 2-0 lead.
The 4-2 victory also saw Ephron Mason-Clark and Victor Torp score. Plymouth had earlier fought back through Oliver Irow and Xavier Amaechi.
Lampard was particularly pleased with Awoniyi’s contribution. However, the Coventry manager knows the striker still needs more minutes.
Lampard said Awoniyi had enjoyed some useful pre-season action at Nottingham Forest. His involvement dropped during his final days there, though.
“I think so. He played some good pre-season minutes at Forest, although probably not so much in his last sort of 10 days before coming to us. So it was good to get him on the pitch at the Emirates and then he starts the game tonight and he gets his goal and an assist, and yeah, he’ll be getting fit at this point but I thought we saw the qualities that we brought him here for.”
Those words underline Lampard’s view of the striker. Coventry signed Awoniyi for his attacking qualities. His performance against Plymouth offered an early glimpse of them.
The Nigerian also showed his value beyond scoring. His assist for Rudoni came just minutes after his opener.
Awoniyi’s performance also carries importance for Nigeria. The striker is looking to build regular playing time again. His return to form could strengthen his position with the Super Eagles.
Coventry have also gained an attacking option as their Premier League campaign continues. Awoniyi’s previous experience in England adds further value to Lampard’s squad.
The Sky Blues now have momentum after their cup victory. Awoniyi will hope his first start becomes the beginning of a consistent run.
Lampard’s assessment remains clear. The striker still needs match fitness. But Coventry are already seeing the qualities that convinced them to sign him.
