The National Sports Commission (NSC) has stepped up preparations for the maiden National Intermediate Games, Bold Sports reports.
The commission inspected several sports facilities across Lagos ahead of the multi-sport competition.
The Games will feature Under-19 athletes from across Nigeria. They will compete in 28 sports during the two-week event. The competition also aims to identify and develop young sporting talents.
The inspection began at Teslim Balogun Stadium. Officials assessed the venue’s suitability for the competition. They also reviewed the stadium turf, indoor sports hall and other facilities.
The inspection team included officials from the NSC, Main Organising Committee (MOC) and Local Organising Committee (LOC).
The delegation was led by NSC Head of Grassroots Development Niyi Beyioku. Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Development Adeboye Adeyinka represented the commission’s Director General.
The team later visited several other venues. These included the National Stadium complex in Surulere and the National Institute for Sports Rowe Park Sports Centre.
Officials also inspected facilities at Yaba College of Technology and the University of Lagos. Other locations included Elegbata Sports Centre and the Cricket Oval at Tafawa Balewa Square.
Mobolaji Johnson Arena is also under consideration. Organisers could use the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies.
The inspection was followed by a technical meeting. The MOC and LOC discussed operational and technical matters.
Athletes are expected to arrive from October 1. The opening ceremony will take place on October 5.
The National Intermediate Games will run from October 1 to 15. Lagos will host the competition, with Teslim Balogun Stadium serving as the main venue.
The competition will bring together athletes from all 36 states. The Federal Capital Territory will also participate. Diaspora athletes will compete as one contingent in Lagos.
The NSC says the Games will help strengthen Nigeria’s grassroots sports system. It will also provide a pathway for identifying promising young athletes.
Notable members of the inspection delegation included Yusuf Alli, Olalekan Alabi and Kola Daniel. Other NSC, MOC and LOC officials also took part in the exercise.
The organisers will now continue technical preparations. Their focus remains on ensuring suitable facilities and smooth delivery of the inaugural Games.
