Ruben Amorim has explained why Samuel Chukwueze can play as a wing-back for AC Milan. The Nigerian has adapted to the role during pre-season. Amorim also expects him to continue there in the 2026/27 campaign.
Chukwueze has already shown his attacking value in pre-season. He scored and provided two assists against Manchester United on August 15. Milan won that friendly 4-2 in Wroclaw. He also impressed while operating from the right wing-back position.
The 27-year-old produced his best display against United. He scored Milan’s equaliser in the first half. He then created goals for Alphadjo Cissé and Gonçalo Ramos.
That performance gave Amorim more evidence. Chukwueze can threaten teams from a deeper position. His pace also gives Milan an outlet on the flank.
The Nigerian spent last season on loan at Fulham. He made 25 appearances across all competitions. He scored three goals and added four assists.
His return has now brought a different challenge. Amorim wants him to combine attacking quality with defensive work.
Amorim believes defensive work starts with the player’s mentality. He also feels Chukwueze possesses the right qualities.
“It depends on the mentality of the player. Sometimes people just look at one player because he’s really good offensively and they think he cannot defend.
“Defending is about spirit and character, which Chukwueze has. He’s improving, of course he’s not the typical defender, but we think he suits our game. He can really help us control the ball and I think he defended much better against Man Utd,” he said.
The coach’s comments explain Milan’s tactical thinking. Amorim wants his wing-backs to contribute in possession. Chukwueze’s ability with the ball fits that approach.
AC Milan have used a 3-4-2-1 shape throughout pre-season. The system gives the wing-backs major responsibilities. Chukwueze has therefore had to adjust from his traditional winger role.
Chukwueze could get another opportunity against Torino. Milan will begin their Serie A campaign away from home on Sunday, August 23. The match will take place at the Stadio Olimpico.
His recent display against Manchester United has raised expectations. Another strong performance could strengthen his case for a regular starting role.
