Christantus Uche has confirmed that he underwent successful knee surgery after suffering a serious injury in Getafe’s pre-season friendly against AS Monaco, Bold Sports reports.
The Super Eagles midfielder now faces a lengthy recovery after the setback ended his 2026/27 season before it began. Getafe also confirmed that the Nigerian will miss the entire campaign.
Uche returned to Getafe after spending last season on loan at Crystal Palace. He made 23 appearances for the Premier League club and scored twice during his loan spell.
The 23-year-old suffered the injury on August 6 against Monaco. Christian Mawissa caught Uche with a heavy challenge during the friendly. Uche left the pitch on a stretcher after the incident.

Further medical tests revealed serious damage to his right knee. The examinations showed multiple ligament and meniscus injuries. Getafe then confirmed that Uche would undergo surgery and miss the season.
The operation has now taken place in Lyon, France. Reports from Spain say the procedure went ahead without complications. Uche can now begin the rehabilitation phase.
Uche shared an update with fans after the operation. The midfielder expressed gratitude to those who supported him through the difficult period.
The player has confirmed that his surgery went as planned and that he has now entered a new phase of recovery.
In a statement, he wrote:
“Today I have taken a very important step on this path. The surgery went as planned, and now a new phase of recovery begins.
“First and foremost, I want to thank Dr. Bertrand Sonney-Cottet and his entire team for the great work and for taking care of me throughout the process. I also want to thank Dr. Christopher and Álvaro for being there for me.
“I would also like to thank my agent, for being by my side, for his support and for accompanying me every step of the way.
“Thank you also to Getafe, the technical staff, my teammates and the entire club for being with me since day one.
“Thank you to everyone who has sent me messages, prayed for me and given me strength. I trust in God, and I know He will give me the strength to get through this process.
“Now it is time to be patient, work hard and trust the journey.
“One day closer to returning. God is great.”

The injury also creates a major problem for Nigeria. Uche will miss Getafe’s season and could miss the Super Eagles’ 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Getafe will now support the midfielder through his rehabilitation. Meanwhile, Uche will focus on returning to full fitness and resuming his career.
