Ademola Lookman will train separately from the rest of his Atletico Madrid teammates in the coming days, after raising injury concerns in the Copa del Rey final.
The Super Eagles winger scored his seventh goal for Atletico in the final against Real Sociedad, but was withdrawn in the 62nd minute and replaced by Nicolás González.
Atletico eventually lost the game in a thrilling penalty shootout after a dramatic 2-2 draw in normal and extra time. The result meant that their search for a first trophy since 2021 continues.
While supporters were confused with Diego Simeone’s decision to remove Lookman that early in a final, Atletico have now released an official statement, explaining the reason behind the move.

The club confirmed that Ademola Lookman, as well as Norwegian striker Alexander Sorloth, both finished the game with discomfort.
“Ademola Lookman and Alexander Sørloth finished the Copa del Rey final with discomfort,” the statement said.
Atletico also revealed the next steps for the duo as they aim to return to full fitness as soon as possible.
“The club’s medical staff have conducted tests that advise maximum caution to avoid the risk of injury, so they will follow an individualized plan in the coming days, training separately from the group.”

“Their return to training with their teammates will depend on how their discomfort progresses,” the statement concluded.
