Cameroon head coach David Pagou has admitted that Bryan Mbeumo is placing heavy demands on himself as he looks to deliver for the Indomitable Lions at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The Manchester United forward, who changed international allegiance after representing France at the youth level, is seen as a key figure for Cameroon as they chase their first AFCON crown since 2017.
While Mbeumo has already made an impact with an assist in the opening 1-0 victory over Gabon, the goals have yet to come.
“He’s putting too much pressure on himself, but I think he will manage that,” Pagou said at a press conference. “He’s a great footballer, a great player, even for this country. He loves this team and really wants to commit to being as effective as possible.”

The coach revealed that discussions have been held with the 26-year-old to ease the burden and encourage him to play naturally. “So today, again, in our little chat with him, the desire is there to be present, to step up, and to do great things,” Pagou added.
Mbeumo, who has scored seven goals in 29 appearances for Cameroon, is known for his expressive style, something Pagou insists will not be restricted. “Bryan is a player who loves freedom; he has those qualities,” he said. “So we are not going to deprive him of that.”
Cameroon, who drew 1-1 with Ivory Coast in their second Group F match, will face Mozambique next, with Pagou stressing respect for an opponent already through to the knockout stage.
