Organisers of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco have introduced free entry for fans after kick-off at matches where stadiums are not filled, according to a source within the Confederation of African Football who spoke to AFP.
Wednesday’s Group F fixture between Cameroon and Gabon in Agadir began with visibly sparse attendance, as persistent rainfall discouraged early arrivals. However, the situation changed during the first half, with large numbers of supporters gradually taking their seats as the game went on.
By the end of the match, organisers announced an official crowd of 35,200 spectators at the stadium, which has a capacity exceeding 45,000. Comparable patterns have been observed at several games since the tournament opened, creating uncertainty around reported attendance figures.

At Tuesday’s Group D clash involving the Democratic Republic of Congo and Benin in Rabat, the crowd figure was first given as 6,703 before later being updated to 13,073 after the stands filled up as play progressed.
The CAF source explained that, with approval from the continental body, gates are opened roughly 20 minutes into matches to allow fans waiting outside to enter without charge.
Ensuring strong attendance is a major priority for Moroccan organisers as the country prepares for its role as co-host of the 2030 World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.

CAF’s ticketing platform still lists seats for most group matches, with prices starting at 100 dirhams, while only a handful of fixtures are sold out.
