Tanzanian midfielder Feisal Salum believes Tanzania can build on the confidence gained from their Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign as they prepare for their fourth appearance at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Morocco 2025.

The Taifa Stars reached the CHAN quarter-finals in August as co-hosts, losing to eventual champions Morocco, with Salum among their standout performers. The midfielder who plays locally for Azam FC says the experience has strengthened belief within the squad ahead of a tougher challenge on Africa’s biggest stage.

“Everyone is really motivated after what we did in CHAN,” Salum told CAFonline.com. “Those games were very tough and almost like AFCON. This will be even harder because we are facing the best players in Africa, but we have built incredible belief and fighting spirit.”

Drawn in Group C alongside Nigeria, Tunisia, and regional rivals Uganda, the East Africans will open their campaign against Nigeria on 23 December in Fez.

Having failed to progress from the group stage in 2019 and 2023, Salum says lessons from past tournaments and the guidance of head coach Miguel Gamondi have left the team confident of reaching their minimum target, the round of 16.

“We have learnt a lot, especially from Ivory Coast last time out. We need to give 100 percent in every game; there is very little room for mistakes, and you must play with the highest standards of discipline. With these lessons, we want to do better, and there is confidence in the group that we can achieve our minimum target. “
