The Confederation of African Football has announced the creation of a new African Nations League, alongside plans to host a world-class senior national team competition every year, except during FIFA World Cup years.

CAF confirmed that the African Nations League will be organised in partnership with FIFA, with the competition designed to feature the continent’s top national teams and Africa’s elite players competing in the world’s leading leagues.

During FIFA World Cup years, CAF will suspend senior national team competitions to allow the nine or 10 African countries that qualify for the tournament to focus fully on World Cup preparations.

CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe said the new structure would raise the standard of African international football and align the continent’s calendar with global fixtures.

“We are excited about the new changes that we have introduced, which will make African senior national team competitions amongst the best in the world, with the best African football players who play in the best leagues in the world participating every year,” Motsepe said.

Motsepe added that the restructuring was developed in collaboration with FIFA, sponsors, and other stakeholders, with a strong focus on eliminating recurring club-versus-country conflicts for African players.

“We want to ensure that African football players do not find themselves in calendar or fixture conflicts between their clubs and national teams,” he said.

CAF expressed confidence that the African Nations League and the revamped senior national team calendar will strengthen the continent’s global football profile.

“The future of African football is bright,” Motsepe added.
