Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyemaechi made an instant impact off the bench, providing the assist for the winning goal in Olympiacos’ hard-fought 1-0 victory over AEK Athens on Sunday.
Olympiacos went into the match with high confidence, having thrashed AEK Athens 4-1 in their previous Super League encounter and 6-0 in their Cup clash. These convincing wins had set the tone for a dominant performance, but AEK Athens were determined to avoid another humiliating defeat in front of their home crowd.
Despite dominating the first half, the league leaders struggled to create clear-cut chances as the home side’s defense was solid, managing to keep Olympiacos’ attackers at bay until the break.
The second half saw AEK Athens come out of their shell, as they dominated possession with the aim of scoring a much-needed goal against Olympiacos. However, they failed to create big chances while recording no shot on target.
The introduction of Onyemaechi in the 86th minute proved to be the turning point. The Nigerian fullback made an instant impact, providing a well-timed pass to Chiquinho, who scored the winning goal to seal all three points for Olympiacos.
The victory extended Olympiacos’ lead over AEK Athens to five points, with the latter remaining in second place with 52 points. The win will also boost Olympiacos’ morale ahead of their Europa League clash against Bodø/Glimt on Thursday.
Onyemaechi’s impressive cameo off the bench will undoubtedly give his head coach food for thought ahead of their next match. The Nigerian fullback’s ability to make an impact in a high-pressure situation is a valuable asset, and he may find himself earning more playing time in the coming weeks.
