The club statement reads, “Victor Boniface cannot take part in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations and is not available to the Werkself for the time being. The Nigerian international was injured while preparing for his country’s selection for the continental championship in Ivory Coast and therefore had to travel home to Germany early.

“Boniface suffered a muscle and tendon injury in his right adductor area during the Nigerians’ training camp in Dubai.

“This was the result of an MRI examination this Tuesday morning in Cologne. Boniface will undergo surgery in the coming days. The 23-year-old striker is expected to return to the Bayer 04 squad at the beginning of April.”

Boniface joined the Germans from Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the summer.
