Nigeria’s Super Eagles have soared to the 28th position in the latest FIFA world ranking, after their impressive performance at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023.
The Nigerian team climbed 14 places from their previous ranking of 42nd, following their silver medal finish at the continental tournament.
Nigeria reached the AFCON final for the first time since 2013, but lost 2-1 to Ivory Coast.
The Super Eagles defeated Cameroon, Angola and South Africa en route to the final, scoring 10 goals and conceding only four.
Nigeria are now the third highest ranked African team, behind Senegal (17th) and Morocco (12th), who also improved their positions after the AFCON.
Ivory Coast, the AFCON champions, moved up four places to 45th, while South Africa, the surprise semi-finalists, jumped 17 places to 41st.
The top five teams in the world remain unchanged, with Argentina, France, England, Belgium and Brazil occupying the first five spots.
The next FIFA ranking update will be on March 14, 2024.
