It’s been an historic season for Nigeria international Victor Osimhen – firstly, he’s helped Napoli win their first domestic league trophy in 33 years, cementing his place as a cult hero ahead of players such as Lorenzo Insigne, Gonzalo Higuain, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Marek Hamšík, Edinson Cavani and a host of others.
He’s the top scorer in the Serie A with 23 goals from 28 games which places him as the 5th highest goal scorer in Europe. Although the race for the Golden Boot is already over, thanks to Haaland’s 35 goals in 32 league games which has shattered the records in the Premier League.
It is almost impossible to match the Norwegians goals tally this season as the closest player to him is Tottenham Hotspurs’ Harry Kane with 26 goals.
Osimhen, however, would be hoping to slip into the top 3 at the end of the season as he is only a goal behind the duo of Ligue 1 strikers Kylian Mbappe and Alexander Lacazette who both have 24 league goals this season.
This will be the first time a player outside Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski would be claiming the award. The Polish striker claimed the last two golden boot awards during his time at Bayern Munich scoring 35 goals in each of the seasons.
It has been an exceptional season for the 24-year-old Nigerian who has not only won Napoli their first domestic league trophy in 33 years but has also broken the record of the African with the most goals in a single Serie A season also becoming the highest scoring African in the Italian topflight breaking George Weah’s record.
