Osimhen eyes Simy Nwankwo Serie A goals record

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen will be eying his 18th Serie A goal of the season when the leaders travel to face in-form Sassuolo later today at the Mapei Stadium – Città del Tricolore.

The Nigeria international will be hoping to score for the seventh consecutive game and help the Partenopei extend their lead on the league table to 18 points as their chase for a first Scudetto title in more than 30 years continues. Second placed Inter play against Udinese on Saturday.

The highest goals scored by a Nigerian in a single season in the Serie A is held by lanky Nigerian forward Nwankwo who found the back of the net 20 times in the 38 games for Crotone in the 2020/21 season but despite the feat, Crotone got relegated to the Serie B after finishing 19th on the league table.

In-form Osimhen has already scored 17 goals in 18 league games and a goal will see him move closer to Simy’s record in the Serie A. Osimhen already holds the record for being the first Nigerian in the Italian topflight to record double figures of goals in three consecutive Serie A seasons.

The Super Eagles striker who will hit Napoli’s cult hero status should he lead the Partenopei to a Scudetto win is currently the top scorer in the league with 17 goals followed by Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman and Inter’s Lautaro Martinez both on 12 goals.

The 24-year-old has become one of the most sought after strikers in the world with Premier League sides Chelsea and Manchester United willing to break the bank for his services while Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are also said to be monitoring the Super Eagles superstar.
