Nigeria has secured the hosting rights for the 2028 ITTF Africa Championships after defeating Tunisia in a vote at the continental body’s Annual General Meeting in Tangier, Morocco.
Nigeria received 23 votes to Tunisia’s 15 after both countries presented their bids to delegates. A total of 38 certified votes were cast, comprising 31 delegates present at the meeting and seven authorised proxies.
The outcome will bring Africa’s premier table tennis championship to Lagos in 2028, with the continent’s leading players expected to compete for individual and team honours.
Nigeria’s experience in staging major international table tennis competitions and its record of organising events in Lagos formed a key part of its successful bid. The country regularly hosts the WTT Contender Lagos and has also staged several continental competitions.
The AGM handed Nigeria a second hosting responsibility after confirming the country as the venue for the 2027 African Para Championships.

Reacting to the decision, Nigeria Table Tennis Federation president Adesoji Tayo thanked delegates for supporting the country’s bids and promised that Lagos would deliver a world-class competition.
“We want to thank all the delegates for placing their trust in Nigeria to host both the 2028 African Championships and the 2027 African Para Championships,” Tayo said.
“As experienced organisers of major international table tennis events, we are committed to delivering a seamless and successful tournament. Lagos will once again welcome the continent’s finest players, and we assure all visitors that Nigeria will be the place to be in 2028.”
Tayo said hosting the championship would further establish Nigeria as one of Africa’s leading destinations for international table tennis while providing a memorable experience for players, officials and supporters.
The AGM also confirmed the hosts of other ITTF Africa competitions scheduled for 2027 and 2028. Libya will stage the 2027 Africa Cup, while Algeria will host the African Championships and Botswana the Youth Championships in the same year.
In 2028, Rwanda will host the African Youth Championships, while Egypt will stage the African Para Championships. The host of the 2028 Africa Cup has yet to be announced.
