Meet the four African players dominating Serie A top goal scorers chart

A look at the Italian Serie A top goal scorers chart will make you smile if you’re an African… Never in the history of the league at this time has four Africans been represented in the top 5 of the league’s top scorers chart. This goes to prove that players from the continent are improving at an impressive rate. They are the top Serie A African players.

Here are the African heroes taking the Serie A by storm and their exploits will only open the way for more players from the continent to move to the league… a good thing I must say.

Serie A African players: Victor Osimhen (21 goals)

Victor Osimhen

With 21 goals from 26 league appearances in the Serie A this season, Nigeria international Victor Osimhen is on the verge of not only helping his side Napoli claim their Scuddetto title in over 30 years. He might just be on his way to becoming the first African to win the Capocannoniere.

Osimhen despite playing fewer games compared to the players on the top five list, his total shots (85) is only second to that of Lautaro Martinez. Osimhen is also on the verge of being named the Most Valuable Player in the league at the end of the season.

Although he’s failed to find the back of the net in his last three appearances for the club, coupled with missing two league games due to a muscle injury, he’s still two goals ahead of Lautaro and he will be hoping to be on target tonight when Napoli takes on Udinese as they hope to clinch the Serie A title.

Lautaro Martinez (19 goals)

Lautaro Martinez

Inter Milan’s resurgence this season has been down to this man – Lautaro Martinez. He is still in the running for the Capocannoniere due to his efficiency in front of goal. In his last three league games, the Argentine has covered the gulf between himself and the League top scorer Victor Osimhen finding the back of the net five times.

He has played seven more games than the Nigerian but with Inter out of the title race, an opportunity to win the league’s golden boot may sound enticing to the Argentine.

Serie A African players: Boulaye Dia (Salernitana: 15 goals)

Boulaye Dia

On loan at Salernitana from Spanish La Liga side Villarreal, Senegalese striker Boulaye Dia has taken the Italian Serie A by storm scoring 15 goals while providing six assists in 30 league games.

Last season, the 26-year-old only scored five goals for Villarreal in 25 games but his time on loan has been productive and eventful – in fact, Salernitana are looking to trigger his release clause which is about €20m but will face a huge challenge as he is wanted by other European top teams amongst them – AC Milan.

In his last three league games, Boulaye Dia has scored five goals including a hat-trick against Fiorentina in a 3-3 draw last time out. Villarreal paid Reims €12m for his services in 2021.

Ademola Lookman (Atalanta; 13)

One of Serie A African players Ademola Lookman

This Nigeria international is on this list thanks to his explosive form at the start of the season. He’s been a revelation for Atalanta scoring 13 goals in his debut campaign with the Serie A club after joining from German side RB Leipzig.

Lookman’s form has definitely dropped in the second half of the season but the Nigerian was delighted to grab his 13th goal of the season against Cremonese in a 3-1 win on April first, his hopes of increasing his goals tally was dashed when he suffered a Biceps femoris muscle injury that has seen him miss the club’s last four games.

He’ll be hoping to return to action before the end of the season.

M’Bala Nzola (Spezia; 13 goals)

M'bala Nzola

The fifth top scorer in the league and joint fourth on the log is Angola and Spezia striker M’Bala Nzola. The 26-year-old has found the back of the net 13 times in 26 appearances while providing two assists.

Nzola had a season to forget in the 2021/22 campaign scoring just two goals in 21 games but his performance this season has been the reason why the club is 14th on the league table and eight points off the relegation zone.

He might not be in the conversation for the Serie A Player of The Season award but he is definitely the Most Valuable Player for Spezia.
