In a poetic fashion, Victor Osimhen’s equaliser in the 52nd minute of their 1-1 draw away at Udinese was enough as Napoli claimed their third Italian Serie A title and their first in 33 years as the Darcia Arena went into wild celebration and the city of Naples jubilated wildly.
Osimhen has arguably been the best player in the league this season and the top scorer in the competition. The visiting fans had thought their celebration of winning the title would once again be extended after the hosts took the lead through Sandi Lovric in the 13th minute.
The fans were however, sent into estatic jubilation when Osimhen grabbed the equaliser in the 52nd minute, a goal which was enough to hand the Naples-based side their first title in 33 years.
Osimhen did not only create a new record for Napoli but also wrote new ones for himself as he equalled the highest-scoring African in the Serie A, a record held by former AC Milan striker and Liberia president George Weah who scored a total of 46 goals in 114 games. Osimhen has scored 46 goals in 78 Serie A games.
After scoring his 22nd goal of the campaign in 27 games, Osimhen has become the African with the highest Serie A goal in a season overthrowing Samuel Eto’o’s feat where he scored 21 league goals in 35 games for Inter Milan in their treble winning season.
