Injured Osimhen misses out on Napoli’s Champions League squad for Milan clash

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has been ruled out of Napoli’s squad to face AC Milan in an all-Italian Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday due to injury.

The 24-year-old who has been Napoli’s top scorer this season failed to make the squad for the Milan game released on Tuesday, having failed to recover on time from injury.

In a post on their website, Napoli said Osimhen “worked separately” from the team during Tuesday’s training session.

Osimhen sustained a thigh injury after returning from international duties in Nigeria’s double-header 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea Bissau last month.

AC Milan defender Theo Hernandez however said the Nigerian’s absence would not make much difference when both sides meet.

He said, “It doesn’t make a difference, Napoli have great players, they’re all good.”

Napoli are 16 points clear at the top of Serie A with nine matches left but lost 4-0 at home to AC Milan in the league on 2 April.

That will count for nothing when the teams meet on Wednesday, said AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli.

“The match in the league will obviously give us an idea, but there’s no way it will be the same match again,” added Pioli, whose side sit fourth in the domestic table, 22 points behind Napoli.

“I think we can expect something different from Napoli so we need to be aware whether we need to make changes from the match in the league.”

Milan ran away with a 4-0 win when both sides met in the Serie A on April 2.
