Godson Brume qualifies for Paris 2024 Olympics men’s 100m

Godson Brume qualified for the men’s 100m at the Paris 2024 Olympics, clocking 9.99s (+0.6) to retain his SEC Outdoor Championships title in Florida, USA, on Saturday evening.

The race, which was billed as a contest between three Nigerians, saw Brume coast to victory in his first sub-10s time of the season, ahead of Florida’s Wanya McCoy who ran 10.02s in second place, and Tennessee University’s T’Mar McCallum in third with a time of 10.03s. Kanyinsola Ajayi finished seventh in 10.09s, while Favour Ashe did not start.

The LSU athlete became the second Nigerian to hit the Olympic automatic qualification mark in the men’s 100m after Favour Ashe.

He also joins Tobi Amusan (women’s 100m hurdles), Udodi Onwuzurike (men’s 200m), Edose Ibadin (men’s 800m), Ruth Usoro (women’s long jump), Chukwuebuka Enekwechi (men’s shot put), Favour Ashe (men’s 100m), Favour Ofili (women’s 200m), Samuel Ogazi (men’s 400m), Ella Onojuvwevwo (women’s 400m), and Ezekiel Nathaniel (men’s 400m hurdles) as the Nigerian athletes to have qualified for the Olympics.

He had ealrier anchored LSU to the men’s 4x100m relay in 38.19s, while Ashe and Ajayi were also part of Auburn’s quartet that placed second in 38.55s.

Ogazi had also, moments earlier, qualified for the men’s 400m at the Olympics, placing second in the final with a Personal Best time of 44.58s, behind Christopher Williams’ best time of 44.05s. Ogazi’s time was the fastest a Nigerian had run in the men’s 400m since 1987.

Tima Godbless placed fifth in the women’s 100m final, running 11.14s, while Ella Onojuvwevwo – who had earlier qualified for the Olympics on Friday – ran another sub-51s race to place eighth in the women’s 400m final in 50.86s.
