Nigeria national fencing coach Ibrahim Alogba believes Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson’s historic gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships can inspire a new generation of Nigerian athletes and accelerate the growth of the sport.
Esiovwa-Thompson made history in Lagos when he won the men’s U-23 epee title, becoming Nigeria’s first gold medallist at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships.
For Alogba, however, the significance of the achievement goes beyond the medal itself.
“It is a huge blessing to the sport of fencing in Nigeria,” Alogba said. “Our athletes now have someone to look up to. Seeing him succeed makes them believe they can do it too.”

The national coach said the impact of the victory was already being felt among Nigerian fencers, many of whom have renewed their commitment to the sport after watching one of their compatriots reach the top of the podium.
“Most of our athletes are saying, ‘Now I am committed, now I am ready.’ That kind of motivation is priceless. At this point, I believe everything is possible,” he said.
Esiovwa-Thompson’s triumph came on his first international appearance for Nigeria after previously competing for England and Great Britain.
He went unbeaten through the competition before completing his run with victory in the final, producing one of the most significant results yet for Nigerian fencing.
Alogba believes the breakthrough can alter the mindset of athletes who have often competed internationally without seeing a Nigerian fencer win at this level.
The victory has also generated fresh interest around the sport, with the national coach noting that athletes outside the existing fencing community are beginning to pay more attention to the opportunities it offers.
Nigeria has gradually expanded its presence in international fencing in recent years, with more young athletes competing across continental and global events.
Esiovwa-Thompson’s gold now provides the programme with a visible success story and, according to Alogba, proof that Nigerian fencers can compete for major titles.
For the national coach, that belief may ultimately be one of the most important legacies of the historic triumph.
