Nigeria’s Adeyinka Samuel has made history after being elected president of the Commonwealth Fencing Federation, becoming the first African to lead the organisation.
Samuel’s election represents another significant milestone for Nigerian and African fencing at a time when the continent is seeking greater representation and influence within the global sport.
Speaking after his election, Samuel described the achievement as one that extends beyond his personal success.
“I think it’s a great achievement for Nigeria and for Africa,” he said. “There’s a lot of work ahead, but with my vision and plans, I believe great things are coming.”

Samuel said his priorities would include strengthening partnerships across member federations, promoting inclusivity and ensuring greater equality of opportunity within Commonwealth fencing.
He is also expected to place strong emphasis on grassroots development, particularly through programmes aimed at introducing fencing to more schools and identifying young talent earlier.
One of the major challenges facing the sport in developing fencing nations is the cost and accessibility of equipment, and Samuel is keen to explore partnerships with manufacturers that could help reduce those barriers.
His experience within African fencing is expected to shape his approach to the role, particularly in areas such as participation, development pathways and support for smaller federations.
The election comes during a period of growing visibility for Nigerian fencing, with the country hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos and producing significant results on the piste.
Samuel’s appointment therefore adds an administrative milestone to Nigeria’s increasing presence in the sport.
As the first African to occupy the position, he will now be expected to balance the interests of established fencing nations with the developmental needs of emerging members across the Commonwealth.
For Nigerian fencing, his election provides another indication that the country’s influence in the sport is expanding both competitively and institutionally.
