The 11th sports competitions of the Western Command of the Eritrean Defense Forces officially commenced on 19 September in Barentu.
Lt. Daniel Yosief, Promotion and Information Officer of the Western Command, said that the objective of the program was to identify the potential of the youth, put it to the advantage of the country and people, and nurture competent young people.
Lt. Daniel went on to say that the program, which will continue for over two months, will bring together 19 teams from both genders to participate in football, volleyball, basketball, athletics, target shooting, cycling, and other sports competitions.
The opening event was attended by Ambassador Mahmud Ali Hirui, Governor of the Gash Barka Region; Brig. Gen. Tsehaye Mekonnen, Chief of Staff of the Western Command; and Brig. Gen. Michael Hans, Chief of Staff of the Popular Force Command.
According to the report, the sports week will continue until 28 October 2026.
