Emmanuel Fernandez has secured a major career milestone after being named Player of the Year at Rangers FC for the 2025–2026 season. The Nigerian centre-back received the award during the club’s annual ceremony in Glasgow, following a campaign that established him as a key figure in the squad.
Fernandez played 23 Scottish Premiership matches this season, scoring five goals. These numbers highlight his impact at both ends of the pitch.
He carried that form into recent matches and maintained consistency in defence. His performances have been vital in tight fixtures, especially in games where Rangers relied on defensive stability to secure results.
The defender joined Rangers last summer from Peterborough United. Just a year ago, he competed in England’s third tier. Now, he has featured in European competition after making his Europa League debut this season.
His rapid development did not go unnoticed. He earned a place in the PFA Scotland Premiership Team of the Year, standing as the only Rangers player included in the selection.

Fernandez has also made progress with the Nigeria national football team. He debuted against Iran on March 27 and scored in his first start four days later in a 2–2 draw with Jordan.
That quick impact at international level reflects his growing confidence and ability to perform under pressure.
Rangers confirmed the award on their official platform, stating:
“In his first season at Rangers, supporters voted Emmanuel Fernandez as Men’s Player of the Year as he collected the final award of the evening.”
The statement also praised his influence:
“Since coming into the team, Fernandez has gone from strength to strength with commanding performances in defence, also showing his threat in set-piece situations.”
This recognition strengthens Fernandez’s profile as one of the rising Nigerian talents abroad. His performances for Rangers and Nigeria suggest he could play an even bigger role in upcoming competitions.
