Super Falcons forward Jennifer Echegini netted her first UEFA Women’s Champions League goal of the season on Wednesday night, but it proved insufficient as Paris Saint-Germain were held to a 1–1 draw by Benfica, a result that brought their European campaign to a disappointing end.

Both teams entered the encounter in search of their first victory of the tournament this season, but PSG showed greater intent from the outset and were rewarded with an early breakthrough as Echegini found the net in the fifth minute.

Despite the setback, Benfica found their way back into the game and got an equaliser in the 32nd minute after Lucia Alves won a penalty which was converted by experienced defender Carole Costa, making the scoreline 1-1 going into halftime.

PSG thought they had regained the lead few minutes after the hour mark as Merveille Kanjinga found the back of the net. But after a long VAR check, the Congolese forward’s goal was ruled out, keeping the scores level.

Despite pushing for a late winner, neither side managed to carve out clear-cut opportunities, with just one shot on target recorded throughout the second half. In the end, both teams had to settle for a share of the spoils, extending their winless runs in the competition.

The result brings an end to their Champions League campaigns, with Benfica finishing 16th on the table and PSG 17th, both sides recording a disappointing return of just two points from six matches..

With their Champions League campaign officially over, Echegini and PSG will shift their focus to domestic action, as they prepare for a highly anticipated derby clash against Paris FC on Saturday.
