Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun has successfully undergone surgery on the hip injury that brought her 2026 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season with Washington Spirit to an end.
The 22-year-old confirmed the development on Friday through a post on her official Instagram account, sharing a series of pictures taken after the surgery.
Abiodun opened up about her experience and offered words of encouragement to younger players who may find themselves in a similar situation.
“It’s tough sometimes but you gotta keep going,” she wrote. “Thank you everyone for your kind words and prayers. First slide is there to motivate players especially younger ones that might be in a similar situation like myself. I was scared and nervous, it gets better, hang in there.”

Washington Spirit confirmed Abiodun’s lengthy injury on September 7, moving the midfielder from the 45-day injury (D45) list to the season-ending injury (SEI) list.
The Nigerian’s last appearance came in Washington Spirit’s 1-0 defeat to Orlando Pride. Since then, the club have played three NWSL matches, recording two victories and suffering a 3-0 defeat to Boston Legacy. Their next match comes up against Chicago Stars on Sunday.
For Abiodun, attention now turns to her rehabilitation as she begins the journey towards a return to competitive football.
The midfielder is certain to miss the Super Falcons’ second-round 2028 Olympic qualifiers against Comoros on October 9 and 13.
However, if Nigeria progress to the third round, scheduled for February 23 to March 6, 2027, Abiodun could have an opportunity to return to the national team by then, depending on her recovery.
