Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season, Washington Spirit confirmed on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old has been moved from the 45-day injury list to the season-ending injury (SEI) list and is set to undergo surgery this week, according to an official statement from the club.

Abiodun has made nine appearances for Washington Spirit this season, including four starts, and has featured for a total of 320 minutes. Her latest injury now brings her 2026 campaign to an end.

Before returning to her club, the midfielder represented Nigeria at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), making four appearances as the Super Falcons were eliminated by Cameroon in the quarter-finals.

She also featured in Nigeria’s 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the Women’s World Cup playoff, a result that ended the Super Falcons’ hopes of qualifying for the global tournament.

Abiodun will now turn her attention to recovery as she looks to return stronger. The midfielder joined Washington Spirit in January 2025 before spending time on loan with Dallas Trinity, where she impressed. She was recalled by the club in August 2025 and has since made 21 appearances for Washington Spirit.

Her absence will be a setback for Washington Spirit, who are pushing for the NWSL title. The club currently sit second in the standings with 43 points, two behind leaders Gotham FC, with seven regular-season matches remaining.

After finishing runners-up in both 2024 and 2025, Washington Spirit will be hoping to end their wait for another NWSL championship, having last lifted the trophy in 2021.
