Super Eagles winger Chidera Ejuke has suffered yet another injury setback after picking up what appeared to be a muscle strain during Sevilla’s 2-0 victory over Girona in their La Liga clash on Sunday evening, Bold Sports reports.
The 27-year-old was making his second start of the season after featuring for 67 minutes in Sevilla’s 2-1 defeat to Getafe. Unfortunately, Ejuke’s evening was cut short as he lasted only 18 minutes before being replaced by Juanlu Sanchez.
Despite Ejuke’s early exit, Sevilla secured their first league win of the campaign thanks to a composed strike from Alfon González in the 30th minute and a swift counterattack finished off by Isaac Romero in the 55th minute, with both strikes assisted by Swiss midfielder Ruben Vargas.
The victory provided a much-needed boost for Sevilla following back-to-back defeats in their opening league fixtures. However, Ejuke’s injury casts a shadow over the result, with the club yet to confirm the severity of the problem or how long he could be sidelined.
Ejuke has endured a frustrating spell with injuries, having missed a large portion of last season due to a serious setback. His struggles continued during preseason, where a thigh problem ruled him out of games against Marseille and the Antonio Puerta Trophy clash.
The Nigerian international played the entire second half in Sevilla’s opening-day loss to Athletic Club and earned his first start of the season against Getafe. Just as he appeared to be finding his rhythm, this latest setback threatens to derail his momentum once again.
Sevilla coach Matias Almeyda will be hoping Ejuke’s injury proves to be minor, especially with several other players already on the sidelines, including fellow Super Eagles forward Akor Adams, who recently suffered a muscle problem of his own.
