Super Eagles defender Chibuike Nwaiwu has become a father just days before Nigeria’s Unity Cup final meeting with Jamaica in London. The 22-year-old and his wife, Melissa, welcomed a baby girl named Jacinta, with Turkish club Trabzonspor confirming the news through an official statement.
“Our football player Chibuike Nwaiwu and Melissa couple had a daughter today.
We wholeheartedly congratulate Chibuike Nwaiwu on the joy of becoming a father and wish their little one, whom they named Jacinta, a healthy and happy life,” the club said.
The announcement arrives during an important period for the Nigerian centre-back, who remains part of the Super Eagles squad preparing for Saturday’s final at The Valley.
Nwaiwu heads into the final after another solid display for Nigeria in their 2-0 semifinal victory against Zimbabwe. He played the full match and helped the Super Eagles keep a clean sheet with a composed defensive performance.

The former Enyimba defender has enjoyed an impressive second half of the season since joining Trabzonspor from Austrian side Wolfsberger AC during the winter transfer window. He became a regular starter quickly and contributed to the club’s Turkish Cup triumph with several consistent performances at the back.
His recent form earned him increased recognition within the national team setup, where he is expected to play a major role again against Jamaica.
Nigeria will attempt to defend the Unity Cup title when they face the Reggae Boyz in London. The Super Eagles lifted the 2025 edition after defeating Jamaica 5-4 on penalties following a dramatic 2-2 draw in regulation time.
With Nwaiwu arriving in high spirits after the birth of his daughter, Nigeria’s coaching staff will hope the defender can continue his strong form on the international stage.
The Unity Cup final also presents another opportunity for the Super Eagles to build momentum ahead of future international assignments while maintaining their dominance in the competition.
