Spanish La Liga side Celta Vigo are reportedly ready to spend £16 million to sign West Brom forward and one-cap Super Eagles international Josh Maja during the January transfer window.
According to reports, Celta sees Maja as an ideal replacement for 37-year-old former Liverpool striker Iago Aspas, who has been the club’s talisman since 2015 but is now nearing the end of his career.
Maja has been in stellar form for West Brom this season, scoring nine goals in 15 Championship appearances. Given his critical role in the club’s push for promotion to the English Premier League, it is unlikely the Baggies will want to part ways with the 25-year-old.
To deter interest, West Brom have placed a £16 million valuation on the striker. However, Celta are reportedly prepared to meet the asking price, as they aim to secure a prolific goalscorer to bolster their battle for La Liga survival.
Maja joined West Brom ahead of the 2023/24 season from Bordeaux but endured a challenging start, managing just one goal in 12 games due to form struggles and a serious ankle ligament injury that sidelined him for over 20 matches.
Now fully fit, the Nigerian striker has rediscovered his form, reminiscent of his goal-scoring prowess at Bordeaux. West Brom are reluctant to lose him, particularly as Daryl Dike, their only other striker, has faced a setback in his recovery from a long-term injury.
