Rivers United suffered a 1-0 defeat to Mozambique’s Black Bulls Maputo in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second-round tie at the Laggy Arena on Saturday.
The Mozambican side will take a slender advantage into next week’s return leg, thanks to a 50th-minute strike from forward Moctar Diallo. Despite several attempts from Rivers United to restore parity, the Port Harcourt-based team failed to convert their chances.
Black Bulls also pressed for a second goal but were denied by a disciplined Rivers United defence.

The Nigerian side now have it all to play for in the decisive return fixture at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
George Finidi’s men will need to secure at least a two-goal victory while keeping a clean sheet to progress to the group stage of the competition.
The winner of the two-legged tie will qualify for the lucrative group phase. Should Rivers advance, they will become the first Nigerian club to achieve the feat since Lobi Stars in the 2018/19 season.
