Black Stars legend Asamoah Gyan has set the record straight over a fabricated quote falsely attributed to him, claiming he accused Victor Osimhen of faking an injury to miss Nigeria’s World Cup qualifier against South Africa in Bloemfontein.

Osimhen picked up an ankle sprain during Nigeria’s 1-0 win over Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo last Saturday after being fouled just outside the box while attempting a shot.

Several media outlets circulated a supposed quote from Gyan, alleging he accused Osimhen of colluding with Galatasaray to feign injury so he could return to club duty for their Turkish Super Lig clash with Eyupspor and their 2025/26 UEFA Champions League opener against Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.

Gyan had earlier dismissed the report as fake news, but in a recent post on X, he went further to clarify the matter, insisting he never made such a statement and also wishing Osimhen a speedy recovery.

“Fabricated quotes attributed to me about Victor Osimhen have gone viral on social media. It’s important to set the record straight: I never granted any interview about Nigeria. The last AFCON game vs Cameroon was the last time I spoke about Osimhen’s talent. Don’t spread FAKE news,” Gyan wrote on X.

“I had a great chat with my brother @VictorOsimhen9 on the phone earlier today. Once again, I wish you a full and speedy recovery.”

Osimhen is expected to return to action for Galatasaray next week after being sidelined for two weeks.
