Alex Iwobi was stretchered off in the 51st minute of Friday’s third round FA Cup 3-1 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford, suffering an ankle injury and is expected to be assessed by the club’s medical team.
The Nigeria international was tackled by defender Tyrell Malacia but although he (Malacia) got the ball first, his feet caught the ankle of Iwobi who was left on the pitch wincing from severe pains. He was replaced by Abdoulaye Doucouré.
Manchester United took the lead in the 4th minute through Antony but Everton got their equaliser in the 14th minute through Conor Coady. Coady turned from hero to villain when he put the ball in his own net in the 52nd minute before Marcus Rashford put the game beyond the reach of the visitors in the 96th minute from the penalty spot to see United advance to the next round.
Iwobi has been one of Everton’s best players this season and has played every minute of the team’s Premier League games save for a 73 minute appearance against Newcastle United in October and a non-appearance against Arsenal earlier in the season.
He was key to Everton avoiding relegation in the 2021/22 season and is one of Frank Lampard’s most industrious and trusted players. His form had led to Everton entering the negotiation table on a bid to extend his contract.
Iwobi had scored once while providing five assists for the Toffees in 18 Premier League games this season.
