Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman was off to a flying start in the Italian Serie A, scoring on his debut for Atalanta as they defeated Sampdoria 2-0 in their season opener on Saturday.
Bold Sports had reported that Lookman joined the Serie A side on a permanent deal from German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig on a four-year deal for a reported fee of €15 million.
He had earlier spent last season on loan at English Premier League side Leicester City with compatriots Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho.
Lookman who was introduced in the 63rd minute, replacing Luis Muriel doubled Atalanta’s lead with a 95th minute strike on his Atalanta and Serie A debut.
The Nigerian was sent on the counter by Ruslan Malinovskyi, cutting back to send his defender to the ground and beat Sampdoria’s goalkeeper.
Atalanta had earlier taken the lead through captain Rafael Toloi who broke the deadlock in the 26th minute.
Duvan Zapata jiggled with the ball on the left and crossed in for Mario Pašalić, who nodded back down at the far post and Toloi tapped in from close range.
